Building bridges for the future: a spotlight on the Partnership Building session at the ADMA TranS4MErs Final Event

      <lead>
In an age where digital transformation and sustainability are reshaping industries, one thing is clear: collaboration is the foundation of progress.

</lead>

This was the driving force behind the Partnership Building and Networking session at the “Shaping the Future of European Manufacturing” event organised by ADMA TranS4MErs on 28 November 2024 in Brussels.

This session wasn’t just about presentations or business cards; it was about creating meaningful connections, sparking ideas, and setting the stage for the future of European manufacturing. Representatives from manufacturing SMEs, industry associations, Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs), and key EU-funded initiatives came together to showcase opportunities and explore ways to work together.

Showcasing transformation in action

The session featured some of Europe’s most innovative projects aimed at fostering digital transformation and competitiveness in the manufacturing sector. By connecting with these initiatives, SMEs can find the tools, expertise, and partnerships they need to accelerate their transformation journeys.

FactoryXChange EDIH acts as a trusted mentor for SMEs, guiding them through the often complex and intimidating process of adopting new technologies. Beyond providing tools, FactoryXChange acts as a bridge-builder, connecting manufacturers with expertise and resources they may not have known existed. By tailoring its support to the needs of individual businesses, the EDIH enables SMEs to embrace digital transformation confidently.

LCAMP Project takes a broader, regional approach to collaboration, focusing on the power of hubs to drive transformation. By pooling knowledge and resources across regional manufacturing clusters, LCAMP demonstrates how shared expertise can help tackle major sustainability challenges. The project emphasises that when businesses, learning platforms, and regional networks join forces, innovation becomes a shared journey, not a solo effort.

OpenZDM Project presented its technical approach to revolutionising production lines. By implementing cutting-edge methods, OpenZDM helps manufacturers eliminate defects and waste, transforming operations into streamlined, sustainable systems. This focus on precision and efficiency reduces costs and makes production more sustainable, offering a clear path forward for SMEs looking to compete at a higher level.

AI REDGIO 5.0 Project and greenSME Project showed that the digital and green revolutions go hand in hand. On the one hand, AI REDGIO 5.0 harnesses the power of AI to boost regional innovation, offering tools that help SMEs adopt smarter processes and adapt to evolving market demands. On the other, greenSME focuses on integrating practical strategies to reduce carbon footprints, proving that sustainability and digitalisation are deeply connected priorities.

UNDERPIN Project and REBOOT SKILLS Project reminded everyone of an essential truth: none of these advancements mean much without skilled people ready to adapt to new technologies. UNDERPIN focuses on building resilience in industrial pathways, while REBOOT SKILLS bridges the digital skills gap by upskilling workers to meet evolving industry demands. These projects place people at the centre of transformation, highlighting that a future-ready workforce is the key to sustainable progress.

MODAPTO Project addressed a universal challenge for manufacturers: unpredictability. With its modular and adaptable production systems, MODAPTO allows SMEs to pivot quickly in response to market changes. This flexibility is critical in today’s volatile environment, where being able to adapt is often the difference between surviving and thriving.

A legacy of transformation

The ADMA TranS4MErs project has already significantly impacted—947 SMEs supported, over 9,000 hours of tailored services delivered, and 110 networking events hosted. The Partnership Building session was a fitting way to pass the baton, connecting attendees with initiatives that can continue to drive innovation and growth.

These projects represent the EU’s unwavering commitment to fostering competitiveness and sustainability in the manufacturing sector. By supporting collaboration and innovation, they’re equipping SMEs with the tools and networks they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving industry.

As attendees left the session, one thing was clear: the future of manufacturing is brighter when we work together. The connections made, ideas shared, and opportunities explored during the session will undoubtedly pave the way for new synergies and advancements in the years to come.

How would you describe your overall experience with the ADMA TranS4MErs project?

The ADMA TranS4MErs journey has been transformative for our company, particularly in identifying and implementing priority areas for digital and operational improvement. The personalized support from our TranS4MEr stood out, especially during the transformation planning phase. The process helped us identify key areas for improvement—such as advanced manufacturing, customer-focused engineering, and smart manufacturing—which have already yielded measurable progress. The interactive and collaborative approach made the journey engaging and memorable.

Can you share the driving force behind your decision to participate in the project?

We were motivated by the need to modernize our processes to stay competitive and align with Industry 4.0 standards. The project's focus on transforming SMEs into Factories of the Future resonated with our goals of increasing efficiency, enhancing customer engagement, and adopting sustainable practices. The support offered through tailored tools and expert guidance was a key factor in our decision.

Have your expectations been met after completing the ADMA TranS4MEr project?

Yes, our expectations have been fully met. The tailored transformation plan directly addressed our critical needs. For example, implementing better manufacturing technologies has reduced costs, while automating customer feedback processes has enhanced our customer relationships. The structured guidance provided by the TranS4MErs platform made these implementations smooth and impactful.

How would you describe the benefits of the ADMA scan and the collaboration with your TranS4MEr for your company?

The ADMA scan provided a clear and detailed assessment of our maturity across seven transformation areas. This insight allowed us to prioritize efforts effectively. Collaboration with our TranS4MEr was invaluable—they provided actionable recommendations, connected us to relevant tools, and helped implement solutions such as modern manufacturing hardware and improved customer feedback mechanisms.

Were there any hurdles or challenges encountered during the scan, and how did the collaboration with the TranS4MEr contribute to overcoming these obstacles?

Initially, we struggled with aligning our team around the identified gaps, particularly in advanced manufacturing technologies. Our TranS4MEr helped us create a detailed roadmap, breaking down complex changes into manageable steps. For instance, they guided us in selecting the right technology upgrades and implementing predictive maintenance systems. This collaborative approach minimized resistance and streamlined execution.

How would you rate the service catalogue in terms of variety, relevance, and suitability?

The service catalogue was comprehensive and highly relevant. It offered a wide range of tools and solutions that catered to our unique needs. The ability to choose services like augmented reality systems for maintenance and AI-based automation ensured that every aspect of our transformation was addressed.

How did you leverage the services offered on the ADMA TranS4MErs platform during your transformation journey?

We leveraged services for hardware upgrades, digital transformation training, and real-time monitoring tools. For example, the AI-enabled production tools and interactive training modules for our staff accelerated the adoption of new technologies. The platform also provided networking opportunities, which helped us connect with technology providers and other SMEs.

After completing the ADMA TranS4MErs program, what were key learnings and insights that stood out to you personally and for your company?

Key insights included the importance of a structured approach to transformation, the value of customer-focused innovations, and the need for continuous upskilling of staff. The program emphasized the significance of aligning digital tools with operational goals, which has now become part of our strategic vision.

Based on your comprehensive journey, would you recommend the ADMA services to other SMEs, and what advice would you give to SMEs that are currently onboarding the project or thinking of starting it?

We highly recommend ADMA services to other SMEs. For those starting the project, our advice is to embrace the scan results with an open mind and actively collaborate with your TranS4MEr. The tailored solutions and expert guidance are invaluable for any organization aiming to transform and modernize.

How would you describe your overall Experience with the ADMA TranS4MErs Project?

Our journey through the ADMA TranS4MErs project has been transformative. One of the most memorable aspects was the detailed scan analysis, which clearly showed where our organization stood compared to the Factory of the Future benchmark. The scan helped us identify significant areas for improvement, such as digital factory integration and customer-focused engineering. Working closely with the TranS4MEr, we translated these insights into actionable steps, particularly in developing an ERP integration roadmap and optimizing manufacturing through real-time data monitoring. This structured guidance has allowed us to implement changes with confidence and precision.

What was your initial motivation to engage with the project?

Our main motivation stemmed from a pressing need to modernize our operations in line with Industry 4.0 standards. As a company focused on maintaining competitive quality standards, we recognized that embracing digitalization was crucial to enhancing our production efficiency, ensuring product quality, and adapting to the fast-changing technology landscape. ADMA’s methodology offered a structured pathway to realize these ambitions, which was especially appealing to us as it provided a comprehensive support system through the transformation process.

Were your expectations met?

The ADMA TranS4MErs project has surpassed our expectations in many ways. The detailed insights into our operational gaps and targeted recommendations provided clarity on complex issues, like optimizing our quality assurance processes and adopting automation in manufacturing. The roadmap created in collaboration with our TranS4MEr was pragmatic, with milestones that were both achievable and aligned with our goals. By the end of the program, we had actionable strategies in place for key areas, such as human-machine interaction and customer-focused engineering, which have already shown measurable improvements in efficiency and product quality.

In your experience, what are the main benefits of the ADMA Scan and the collaboration with the TranS4MEr?

The ADMA scan provided us with a clear view of our organizational maturity across seven transformation areas, highlighting where we excel and where there is room for growth. Our highest scores were in human-centered organization (T5), demonstrating a strong foundation in employee engagement and development. However, areas like digital factory (T2) and smart manufacturing (T6) scored lower, indicating a need for more digital integration and process automation. Our TranS4MEr was instrumental in helping us interpret these results and devise a plan tailored to our needs. For example, the TranS4MEr’s recommendations on ERP solutions and real-time monitoring were pivotal in addressing our gaps and enhancing our digital capabilities.

What was the main challenge you faced during the journey?

A significant challenge was the integration of digital tools into our existing legacy systems, particularly when it came to connecting our machinery with a unified ERP system. Our TranS4MEr facilitated discussions with technology providers, suggesting incremental upgrades rather than a full overhaul, which was both cost-effective and practical for our operational scale. Through collaborative problem-solving sessions, we developed phased implementation plans that allowed for smooth integration without disrupting ongoing production. An example was the deployment of predictive maintenance on select machines, which allowed us to test and refine the approach before broader application.

How would you describe your collaboration with the TranS4MEr?

The collaboration with our TranS4MEr was highly valuable. They brought expertise in digital transformation specific to the manufacturing sector, which helped us address unique challenges in our production processes. They provided specific contributions, such as detailed feedback on ERP integration and suggestions for implementing machine learning for quality assurance. Their ongoing support allowed us to troubleshoot challenges in real-time, ensuring the transformation initiatives stayed on track and adapted to our specific requirements.

What are the key takeaways from your participation in the Programme?

Key learnings included the importance of phased implementation in digital transformation. We learned that gradual upgrades, particularly with ERP and real-time data monitoring, provided better control and minimized disruption. The workshops emphasized the role of continuous data analysis in decision-making, inspiring us to adopt more data-driven strategies in quality control and production planning. For our company, these insights have solidified the importance of adopting an adaptable and resilient approach to technology integration.

Shaping the Future of Manufacturing: a recap of the ADMA TranS4MErs Final Event

      <lead>
“The timing couldn’t be better” said one participant at the Shaping the Future of European Manufacturing: Growth and Innovation for SMEs conference, held on November 28, 2024, in Brussels.

</lead>

And they were right. Over 110 industry leaders, policymakers, and representatives of Digital Innovation Hubs and EU-funded initiatives gathered for what turned out to be a truly meaningful and inspiring event.

This wasn’t just another conference, rather the culmination of a journey that has supported the digitalisation journey of 947 manufacturing SMEs across Europe with over 9,000 hours of tailored services and created 110 networking events that connected key players from all corners of the industry. This event marked the end of an important chapter but it also highlighted the potential and opportunities in the European manufacturing sector.

Key insights from industry leaders

ADMA TranS4MErs coordinator Syam Nair opened the day by recapping the key results and achievements achieved in the past three years. His words perfectly summarise the spirit that guided the consortium over the past three years: "This project isn’t just about transformation. It’s about building a community of changemakers committed to shaping a more competitive and sustainable future for European manufacturing."

Oliver Kozak, Policy Officer at the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency, highlighted what makes our project so special in his keynote address: "SMEs were often left behind when working with big corporations. No incentives meant no real change, but now, through projects like ADMA Trans4MErs, we’re creating meaningful benefits for the European ecosystem." And Szabolcs Szekacs, Policy Officer at the EU’s GROW Unit, followed with a powerful message: “The integration of advanced manufacturing technologies and embracing the circular economy presents huge opportunities for Europe.”

These addresses set the tone for the day, reminding us that the future of manufacturing lies in innovation, sustainability, and collaboration.

The panel discussions throughout the day gave us a deeper look into SMEs' challenges and opportunities in today’s manufacturing landscape, diving into market needs, financial instruments and support services available across the EU. With policymakers like Salvatore Amico Roxas (DG GROW unit), Rachel Davies and Gash Bhullar (Digital Manufacturing Innovation Hub Wales), Jana De Merlier (STAR Research & Innovation Cluster), Walter Quadrini (Politecnico di Milano), and representatives of the ADMA TranS4MErs consortium, the discussions highlighted how collaboration and hands-on support are key to making the transition smoother for SMEs.

Collaborating for a stronger ecosystem

The Partnership Building session was one of the highlights of the day. EU-funded initiatives FactoryXChange, LCAMP, OpenZDM, AI REDGIO 5.0, greenSME, UNDERPIN, REBOOT SKILLS and MODAPTO shared their work, sparking new ideas and opportunities for networking and collaboration. These sessions proved that by working together, we can push the boundaries of what’s possible in the digitalisation of manufacturing.

In the afternoon, we also got to hear directly from some SMEs that went through the Digital Transformation Programme. Together with their TranS4MErs, HOUFEK (Czech Republic), ICONSOF (Sweden), FAMILY INNOVATION and AGROINFINITY (Romania) shared their transformation stories, offering inspiration and real-world examples of how digitalisation has made a tangible impact on their operations.

Looking ahead

The event wasn’t just about celebrating what’s been achieved; it was about setting the stage for what comes next. Lise-Ann Sheahan summed it up perfectly when she said, “It’s about people”: the true spirit of this event wasn’t just about technology but about the people driving that change, and the resilience and passion they bring to the table. As Magdalena Jabłońska wisely put it, “For SME owners, their business isn’t just a job; it’s their life. It’s about enabling these businesses to grow.”

As the ADMA TranS4MErs project concludes, the momentum from this event continues to build. The insights shared, the connections made, and the lessons learned will all play a part in shaping the future of the European manufacturing sector.

We’re excited to see how our results and findings will continue contributing to the digitalisation and innovation of SMEs across Europe. We hope our work will help drive positive change and that the connections made at this event will spark future collaborations for years to come.

Meet our Factories of the Future: Linjateräs Powder Coating

      <lead>
Linjateräs is a Finnish manufacturing company specialized in powder coating of steel products for a diverse range of industries. Combining traditional manufacturing with modern technology, Linjateräs aims for excellence and efficiency in their operations by continually monitoring the needs and demands of the industry.

</lead>

When Linjateräs first heard of the ADMA TranS4MErs programme, they had a clear goal: to use it to speed up their digital transformation and become the most competitive powder coating company in an increasingly digitalized manufacturing field. As a traditional manufacturing company, they recognized the need to adapt and evolve to meet modern demands. The ADMA TranS4MErs programme presented a structured approach to achieving this transformation, making it a great opportunity to understand the current situation of the company’s operations as well as the areas to develop in the short and long term to support the sustainable growth of the company.

“Our aim is to grow significantly as a company and revolutionize the surface treatment industry by introducing a carbon-neutral coating to the market, something that hasn’t been available before. We are strongly promoting a new mindset and a green transition in an industry that is quite traditional,” says Lasse Heikinheimo, Production Manager at Linjateräs

Such revolutions do not happen on their own, but require strong commitment and collaboration from employees and external stakeholders. Moreover, programmes such as ADMA TranS4MErs can provide additional support by offering tailor-made consultation and an objective view of the company’s actions.

To start their journey, Linjateräs completed the ADMA TranS4MErs scan that evaluated their performance across 7 different transformation areas. The scan was first completed in 2023 and again in 2024, after some changes had already taken place. These changes included, among other things, mounting a new factory for additional services, implementing real-time monitoring of workstations, updating forklifts to electric versions, and focusing on decreasing the company’s environmental impact via energy savings. After discussing the original and latest scan results, it was clear that the company has already taken multiple steps in their digital transformation. In fact, the company was even chosen as the Entrepreneur of the Year 2024 of the Pirkanmaa region in Finland!

The digital transformation continues

ADMA TranS4MErs is a comprehensive programme designed to support the digital transformation of manufacturing SMEs. It offers a digital scanning tool to evaluate company operations, tailored expert support, and practical actions that enable companies at any stage of their digital transformation to move forward. The added value of the ADMA TranS4MErs program lies in its holistic approach, which not only provides the ADMA TranS4MErs scan for assessing a company's performance across different transformation areas but also offers personal guidance and support from a trusted ‘TranS4MEr’.

“Based on discussions related to scan results and our strategy, we received a customized transformation plan that will be used as a roadmap for the company’s operations in the coming years.
Although the ADMA TranS4MErs programme is coming to an end, Linjateräs continues its digital transformation by, e.g. participating in the Data & AI accelerator organized by DIMECC, increasing their understanding of the possibilities of using data to grow their business even further.
Meet our Factories of the Future: Linjateräs Powder Coating

          <lead>
Linjateräs is a Finnish manufacturing company specialized in powder coating of steel products for a diverse range of industries. Combining traditional manufacturing with modern technology, Linjateräs aims for excellence and efficiency in their operations by continually monitoring the needs and demands of the industry.

</lead>
